System Passwords 3 Feb, 2003 - GEST Introduction - You may have passwords on any of the following group machines. Any password that you use from outside our subnet needs to be changed periodically. All passwords should be 8 characters or longer, and consist of letters and words. NEVER CHANGE A PASSWORD OVER AN UNENCRYPTED CONNECTION. Here's a list of common passwords Bigbro LINUX password - If you use the bigbro mailbox, you have a LINUX password. Bigbro SASL password - Depending on how you send mail through bigbro, you may have a SASL password -(currently sol, rparker, gruner, mark, tate, drschuet, zinter, us). - This password is only used to allow you to send mail. Remote LINUX password - If you can log into remote, you have one of these. Remote SAMBA password - If you mount Remote's hard drive on a Windows Box you may have one of these. - This password is only used to map hard drives. BIGSIS password - If you use any of the hard drives on BIGSIS (eg. PEOPLE, DATA) you have a password to access them. Bigbro LINUX Password - If you are within our subnet, log onto bigbro via SSH If you are outside our subnet, log onto remote via SSH. Log onto bigbro from remote via SSH remote> ssh username@bigbro.biophys.cornell.edu Use the "passwd" command, username@bigbro> passwd Bigbro SASL Password - Log onto bigbro via SSH (directly if inside the subnet and via remote if not). Use the "saslpasswd" via the line username@bigbro> sudo /usr/sbin/saslpasswd -u bigbro.biophys.cornell.edu username Remote LINUX Password - Log onto remote via SSH.
