Power Management on BIGSIS - GEST Feb 13, 2003. ******* Intro - Bigsis is plugged into a American Power Supply Smart UPS 650 V/S This supplies at least a couple of minutes of battery power after the mains fail. Bigsis and the Arena RAID array share the same UPS. The plan is for BIGSIS to learn (via RS232 serial cable) that the power has failed, switch itself off, turn off the UPS as it departs and that in turn shuts down the RAID array. When power returns, the UPS should turn itself on and the RAID array should fire up as well. Then, simply switching BIGSIS back on should do the job. ****** Cable between APC 650 SmartUPS V/S and BIGSIS The cable is a non-standard RS232 Serial Cable. Computer - DB9 Female RxD - pin 2 TxD - pin 3 GND - pin 5 SmartUPS - DB9 Male Rxd - pin 1 Txd - pin 2 GND - pin 9 Wiring diagram from page 32 of the apcupsd.pdf manual. ****** BIGSIS Settings Power control is accessed by, -- You just set the UPS model number and can then set all the required parameters. I've set BIGSIS to shut off 2 minutes after power fails. By accessing the power control panel you can also see the status of the UPS. ****** Restarting BIGSIS 1. Check the UPS is turned on. 2. Check the RAID array is turned on. 3. Check the Switch is turned on. 4. Press the Power On button. 5. Adjust the KVM (press the button or use --<3>) to show the boot sequence from BIGSIS on the screen. BIGSIS is on slot 3 of the KVM. 6. BIGSIS should talk to you the whole time and settle to a login screen after a few minutes. 7. You can check BIGSIS can access the outside world by logging in, firing up Internet Explorer 4 and visiting the Cornell Website. 8. You can check BIGSIS is networking properly by mapping the RAID array from your PC. Possible problems 1. The video card and other boards in BIGSIS have a habit of coming loose and this halts the boot cycle. Turn BIGSIS off, open her up, give the cards a good wiggle and start again. 2. If there is no access outside our subnet (Firewall dead?) then BIGSIS can boot slowly as she trys to access the nameserver. ****** References The APC Website is rather helpful. http:\\www.apcc.com\ APC gives away PowerChute, a more powerful system for managing the UPS. I've registered as username : gilman0 (zero) password : catnip The APCUPSD documentation has technical details they don't give.
