Brief Summary of Bigsis Intro Essential details Raid Array Account Management File Sharing and Security Network Access to Bigsis Backing Up Archiving CDs Virus Scans Windows 2000 Updates Defragging Drives Disk Quotas If it all goes horribly wrong! References Notes ********* Intro - Bigsis is the network file server. Bigsis operates using Windows 2000 Server. Bigsis is a DELL Precision 530 Workstation. Bigsis has 1 Gig of Memory Dual Xeon Processors 2 * 80 Gig IDE Hard drives CD Writer DVD/CD-ROM Adaptec AIC 7892- Ultra160 PCI to SCSI controller card. Built in Ethernet Card Bigsis hosts our RAID Array. Various parts of the RAID Array are shared over the network. The network is Peer-to-Peer so Bigsis is accessible to all machines. ********** Essential details. Operating System = Windows 2000 Server. Service Pack 2. IP = 128.253.36.40 Name = BIGSIS Workgroup = BIOPHYSICS Hard Drive Structure c: ==> 10 Gig partition for Windows 2000 Server Y: ==> 63 Gig partition for backups, etc. z: ==> 75 Gig second hard drive. Presently used for backups. G: ==> Raid Array 521 Gig. All one partition but we've spaced things out. \\Bigsis\People --> Place were personal material goes. \\Bigsis\Data --> Place where data goes. \\Bigsis\Admin --> Where the administrator can stash anything they like. Account Info Administrator --> Account that does all admin tasks Admin password in the system log. Us --> Generic account that will ideally only have read access. Right now it has no password. Individual Users --> Each user configures their account as they wish. ********** Raid Array The raid array is an 8 disk RAID-5 Array. Check it once a week. Talk to it with hyperterm. Raid Array password is A07? Raid Array easts Seagate Barracuda ATAIV 80 Gig drives. We've got two spare drives. Documentation is filed under RAID. Spare Hard drives are in the DATA area of the people room. Talking via Hyperterm 1. Hyperterm is in --- 2. Sample config file, raid.ht in \\bigsis\people\admin\raid.ht 3. Select "Manage" Click on "Local Users and Groups". Select Users. Add new users using the right click. Make all users normal users. Read Mark Minasi's book for more details. ********** File Sharing and Security File access is controlled at 2 levels. Security and Sharing. Shares A file is potentially available if a share exist to any folder in the tree above it. eg. g:\People\toombes is shared because the folder, g:\People is shared. You can manage shares either by, 1. Right click on folder. 2. Select "Sharing". Or by, 1. Fire up "Computer Management" 2. Go to shares section. Share as little as you can. Security This is tricky. You can view a files properties with, 1. Right click on folder/file. 2. Select Properties 3. Select security. 4. To see ownership got to "Advanced" View existing security settings, talk to Gil or read "Managing Windows 2000" to get the hang of this. For a Linux user it's quite confusing. ********** Network Access to Bigsis Within our subnet 128.253.36.10/255.255.255.192 there is full access to bigsis. Bigsis has normal privileges to IP addresses outside Cornell. Bigsis is only directly accessible to the two external machines, a) Sol's Computer at CHESS b) Valorie's Computer on the 5th floor. orange.lassp.cornell.edu Check the firewall for more details September 8, 2002. GEST. ********** Backing Up 1. Click on Start 2. Select Programs 3. Select Accessories 4. Select System Tools 5. Select Backup. Select the "Backup" option. Pick files you want to backup. Set filename you want to backup into. Fire away. Nb. you can save incremental backups using the "ADVANCED" option. you should select the "verify backup" option. the scheduled backups don't work at the moment. ********** Archiving CDs We've installed Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. Access it through the program menu. Burning a CD takes about 10 minutes. ********** Virus Scans Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition is installed. We obtained this through CIT. It's a pain to use. Access is through the "Program" menu. Scan disks weekly. Use Live-Update feature first to upgrade virus protection. Do not activate real-time scanning feature!!!! Do not stay logged in as administrator. It's a security risk. Scheduled scans appear not to work if you are not logged in as admin. ********** Windows 2000 Updates On the startup menu there's an item to launch the Windows 2000 Upgrade.\ Upgrade regularly. Log upgrades in system log. Remember that you still have to reboot most times. ********** Defragging Drives Drives are managed as Administrator by right-clicking on the offending volume. You can defrag, analyze and do all kinds of other cool stuff. ********** Disk Quotas I've installed quotas on the RAID array. You examine them by, 1. Right click on g: 2. Select Quota. 3. Click on "Quota Entries". This will only work if people log in as themselves. ********** If it all goes horribly wrong. 1. I've installed the rescue package as a second boot option. 2. If things are so bad you're using this option, read "Managing Windows 2000" before going ahead. ********** Resources Mark Minasi's "Managing Windows 2000" - Located in the Windows Software section. p125 LBVI Gil Toombes Windows 2000 Server Install documented on P141 LBVI Gil Toombes. ********** Notes 1. Scheduled tasks does not work at present. Not sure why. Appears to be a conflict on file permissions somewhere.
